WE ARE KOI
Swimming against the current, we are driven by resilience, compassion, and the unwavering belief that every person deserves dignity, care, and a chance to reclaim control over their life. In the heart of the Ottawa/Gatineau region, The Koi Foundation exists to support those experiencing homelessness— providing essential care, harm reduction, and a community that refuses to turn a blind eye. We are here to meet people where they are, without judgment or conditions, but with open hands and hearts.
WHY THE KOI?
The koi fish is a symbol of strength and perseverance. In Japanese tradition, koi are known for their ability to swim upstream, against the fiercest currents, embodying the spirit of resilience and determination. They do not surrender to the flow — they carve their own path.
Our symbol, the red and white (Kohaku) koi, holds even deeper meaning.
- The red represents strength, struggle, and an unbreakable spirit — a reflection of those we serve, who face life’s hardships with courage.
- The white symbolizes hope, renewal, and new beginnings — a reminder that no one is defined by their hardest moments.
Together, these colors tell a story of survival, of rising despite the odds, of finding light even in the darkest waters. This is the spirit of The Koi Foundation.
WHAT WE DO
We are more than just a support system — we are a movement, standing alongside those who have been forgotten or ignored. Through direct outreach, harm reduction efforts, and access to basic necessities, we strive to create a safer, more compassionate community where no one is left to struggle alone.
